Baptism

A Commitment to Follow Jesus

In the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC), our denomination, baptism is a sacred and symbolic act representing one's commitment to follow Jesus Christ. It signifies the believer's identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection and incorporation into the community of faith.

Baptism involves immersion in water, symbolizing the believer's participation in Christ's death and resurrection. As they are lowered into the water, they identify with Christ's burial, symbolizing the burial of their old self and the forgiveness of sin. Rising from the water represents their new life in Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Baptism is not merely a ritual but a public declaration of faith and a covenant with God and the church community. It begins a lifelong journey of discipleship and obedience to Christ. Through baptism, believers affirm their commitment to live according to Jesus' teachings and to participate in the mission of God's kingdom.

But What About the Children?

The Covenant Church has steadfastly worked to maintain the church's unity by practicing both believer baptism and the dedication baptism of infants, later ratified personally in believer’s baptism. By the word of the gospel, the Covenant Church has called people to be “born anew to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (I Peter 1). Baptism bears witness to, proclaims, and is a sign of this work of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the Covenant includes both "Believers Baptism" and "Infant Baptism."
